Damage preserving transformation for materials with microstructure

The failure of heterogeneous materials with microstructures is a complex process damage nucleation, growth and localisation. This spans multiple length scales challenging to simulate numerically due its high computational cost. One option use domain decomposed multi-scale methods dynamical refinement. If needed, these refine coarse regions into fine-scale representation explicitly model the in microstructure. However, evolution commonly restricted only. Thus, they are unable capture full complexity breath degradation material. In this contribution, generic procedure that allows account for all representations proposed. approach combines specially designed orthotropic law, scheme generate pre-damaged microstructures. Results indicate approximation works well. Furthermore, generated patterns overall consistent simulated patterns. Minor discrepancies occur generation but subsequently vanish when explicit continuous; instance under increased load. presented provides methodological basis adaptive simulation schemes evolution.
